TRIBUTES FROM FAMILY, FRIENDS, TEAM-MATES & FANS

Dear friends
I just wanted to let you know that this morning we said goodbye to Iggy.
Our beautiful, strong, brave, kind Iggy.
After a short stay in hospital with an infection he just couldn’t fight it off.
I was with him all night playing music, singing songs (badly) and reminding him of our great adventures.
His dad and brother powered up the M1 and made it just in time. Iggy held on for them. We were all with him at the end. It was calm and peaceful.
And after a very tough few years we can remember him for the lovely man, friend, husband, brother, son, team mate and dad that he was.
Huge huge thanks to all of you who have got us this far, made memories and will help us savour them in the years to come.

We’re going to take a few days off from the world so if I don’t respond to messages please accept my apologies.

LIZ  (& Beth) X

Yesterday was the saddest day of my life. I have been reading all the lovely messages from all over the world. Thank you so much for all of these. Alan clearly touched the heart of all he came in contact with.
The pride I had watching him play cricket for clubs, Kent and England made me feel as tall as he was. He’s been described as a champion, legend, hero, funny, mischievous, he was all those things but to me he was the best brother I could ever wish for.
Dad and I drove to Yorkshire through the night, he passed within 10 minutes of us arriving. He hung on until we got there for sure. I was holding your hand as you went to sleep my hero, sleep well.
Will never stop loving you x

The PCA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alan Igglesden, who died peacefully at the age of 57 beside wife Liz, father Trevor and brother Kevin on the morning of Monday 1 November, whilst listening to his favourite musician Van Morrison.
An absolute inspiration to everyone he encountered, 'Iggy' was a true cricketing giant in Kent, the county where he spent his entire playing career.
Throughout his journey, Iggy's strength and courage in the face of adversity were nothing short of inspirational.
Beloved by his students throughout his time in teaching, he went on to father one daughter, Beth, now eight years of age, as he built a family of his own alongside Liz.

Such a sad day today.
Losing such a wonderful man like Iggy is truly heart-breaking. He fought his illness so hard like the champion he is and he will be greatly missed by so many people.
When I started my career in the early 90’s a cricket dressing room was a very different place to how it is now. As a young player you just kept you’re head down and got on with it. You weren’t really coached and there was very little support from senior players. There were a couple who were different and Iggy was one of them. He cared, took time to look out for me and gave me guidance in the five years we played together. I will always be grateful for the way he was with me in the those early days and our friendship remained up until today when he passed away.
Anyone that ever met Iggy couldn’t help but love him and he just had that knack of making people feel special when they were around him! Funny, charming, quick witted and always kind, he was always someone you wanted to be around.
He really didn’t deserve the hand he was dealt but he never moaned and just kept being the great man he is!
I will miss you mate. Rip Iggs x

Devastated at the passing of my mate Iggy yesterday. Despite battling inoperable brain tumour for 20yrs+ I never heard him complain. Blessed with memory of his smile just few months ago & our long friendship my heart goes out to Liz, Beth and his amazing family Broken heart RIP Buddy
PHIL TUFNELL - former England Cricket team-mate

‘Iggy’ was a whole hearted player on the field and a lovely man off it.
The way he fought and coped with his illness, supported brilliantly by his family, was an example and inspiration to us all.
DAVID GOWER
- former England Cricket Captain

Iggy faced his challenges with great bravery, stoicism and cheerfulness. Such sad news
We last spoke in May when it was clear any further setbacks would be fatal and he was an inspiration in the way he stoically and cheerfully faced his situation.
A fine bowler and a good friend – I spent time with him in Cape Town in the early 1990s when recovering from a back operation and captained him in the Caribbean in 1994- he will be missed by his many former colleagues and team mates in the game.
MICHAEL ATHERTON - former England Cricket Captain

I was privileged to have captained the young Alan Igglesden at Kent and he was a joy to have in the team. He would bowl his heart out, he knew how to hold a bat as well and most importantly he had a great sense of humour in the dressing room. We would have won the Championship by a distance in 1988 if he had stayed fit. Everyone loved ‘Iggy’.
CHRIS COWDREY - former Kent & England Cricket Captain

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Iggy. Fond memories of our times at Kent CC. Condolences to his family. Rest in peace Iggy
CARL HOOPER - former Kent & West Indies player

A sad loss and the world is a lesser place without the big man in it!
Iggy, was the strongest man I’ve met. He tackled his continual illness with dignity and always with a smile on his face until the end. Rest in peace my friend, I will never forget you and the great times we had together.
STEVE MARSH - former Kent Cricket Captain

‘Iggy’ was a close friend. We went on holiday to Portugal with him, and he was godfather to our son Charlie. He was a wonderful person and an outstanding bowler.‘ Iggy’ was a close friend. We went on holiday to Portugal with him, and he was godfather to our son Charlie. He was a wonderful person and an outstanding bowler. He will be greatly missed and I’m only glad I had the opportunity to see him, Liz and Beth when at Headingley over the last four years.
RICHARD ELLISON - former Kent & England team-mate

‘Iggy’ guided me through my early days at Kent, helping me adjust to county cricket, living in England and how to look after the body for the repetition of fast bowling.
He was in the dressing room at Trent Bridge when I made my Test debut, and his words still stick in my mind: “before you bowl your first ball…stop! Take a breath…look around the ground…and take it all in…you’ll keep those moments forever”. He was right and in that moment I knew we’d be mates forever. Those words will never leave me.
Iggy did all the hard yards, and he never moaned. He was a genuine fast bowler, who made the ball talk and he always did it with a smile on his face.
He was truly a great ‘Man of Kent’ – may he rest in peace. He will be missed.
MARTIN McCAGUE - former Kent team-mate

So sorry to hear the news. Fun memories of him in his early days at Kent, playing and driving him to games.
DEREK ASLETT - former Kent player

Very sorry to hear this. Iggy was a fantastic human being and a great competitor. He had so much fun playing the game but at the same time played with a ton of passion when he put his Kent cricket cap on. Condolences to his family and friends during this awful time. RIP Iggy

Alas, very sad news in Kent after ‘Iggy’s’ passing.

What a fighter! We had our annual Iggy Golf Day on 22 October at Westerham Golf Club, with a link up with Iggy and his family in Yorkshire at dinner.

Even in adversity he melted everyone in the room with his smile, his only means of communicating.

I feel I have lost a younger brother.

Kevin, so sorry to hear the news about Alan.
In our 25 year battle against brain tumours I can truly say he was one of the most inspirational patients we had the privilege to meet.

I have so many great memories of Alan going back many years. I was lucky enough to play cricket & Captain Iggy for Westerham Colts, many years ago, what a privilege & pleasure that was. The most memorable occasion being in May 1979 when Palace beat Burnley 2.0 to win Promotion to Division 1 (as it was then) ... in front of over 51000 spectators!
